Building a custom driveway gate is one of the most satisfying projects we do at T & C Fabrication. Each gate is unique to the property and the client, but the fabrication process follows a proven sequence that ensures quality and proper fit. Here is how a typical gate project progresses from first call to final installation.
Step 1: Site Visit and Measurement
Every gate project starts with a site visit. We measure the driveway opening, evaluate the terrain and grade, assess soil conditions for post foundations, note any utilities or obstacles, and discuss design preferences with the homeowner. Photos and measurements from the site visit are essential for accurate design and fabrication.
Step 2: Design and Quotation
Based on the site visit, we prepare a design concept and detailed quotation. This includes gate dimensions and style, material specifications (steel gauge, aluminum alloy, cedar grade), finish selection (galvanize, powder coat, paint), hardware selection (hinges, latches, locks), and total installed price. We can incorporate design elements from photos or sketches the homeowner provides, or suggest designs that complement the home's architecture.
Step 3: Fabrication
Once the design is approved, fabrication begins in our Quadra Island shop. Steel tube and plate are cut to dimension and jigged for welding. The frame is welded square and true, with all joints fully penetrated. Any decorative elements — scrollwork, cut-outs, lettering — are added. The completed steel frame is cleaned, prepped, and sent for hot-dip galvanizing. After galvanizing, powder coating is applied in the chosen colour.
Step 4: Installation
Installation typically takes one day. Post holes are dug and steel posts are set in concrete. After the concrete cures, the gate is hung on heavy-duty hinges and adjusted for smooth operation. Latches, locks, and stops are installed and fine-tuned. Cedar panels, if included, are installed as the final step. We test the gate through multiple open-close cycles and make final adjustments.
Step 5: Handoff
We walk the homeowner through gate operation and maintenance. You receive care instructions for both the steel and cedar components, hardware lubrication schedule, and our contact information for any adjustments or service needs.
