Best Aluminum Alloys for Coastal BC Gate Projects

Best Aluminum Alloys for Coastal BC Gate Projects

When homeowners on Vancouver Island choose aluminum for their gates and fencing, they are making a smart choice for our coastal climate. But not all aluminum alloys are created equal. The wrong alloy in a saltwater environment can develop pitting corrosion, lose strength at welds, or simply not hold up to the demands of a gate that gets used daily. Here is what you need to know about choosing the right alloy.

6061-T6: The All-Rounder

6061-T6 is the most commonly used structural aluminum alloy and our primary choice for gate and fence fabrication. The T6 temper means it has been heat-treated and artificially aged for maximum strength. It machines well, welds well with TIG, and accepts anodizing and powder coating readily. For residential gates that need to look good and last decades, 6061-T6 is hard to beat. It offers excellent corrosion resistance in coastal air when properly finished.

5052 and 5086: Marine-Grade Options

For gates installed right on the waterfront — dock gates, marina entries, beachfront properties — we sometimes step up to 5000-series alloys. 5052 offers better corrosion resistance than 6061 in salt spray environments and bends easily for decorative elements. 5086 is the premium choice for anything in constant saltwater contact. These alloys cannot be heat-treated like 6061, so they are a bit less strong, but their superior corrosion resistance makes them ideal for the harshest coastal locations.

Finishing Matters as Much as Alloy

Even the best alloy benefits from proper finishing. For gates on Vancouver Island, we recommend powder coating over bare aluminum. Powder coating provides a thick, durable barrier that resists UV damage, salt spray, and physical wear. It comes in virtually any colour, from classic black to custom-matched heritage colours. Anodizing is another option that chemically converts the surface into a hard, corrosion-resistant oxide layer.

What We Recommend

For most residential gate projects on Vancouver Island, 6061-T6 with a quality powder coat finish is the best combination of strength, corrosion resistance, appearance, and value. If your property is directly on the waterfront or in a high-salt-spray zone, we will discuss 5000-series options with you.
