BC Building Code Requirements
The key code requirements for residential handrails and guards include: guards (barriers to prevent falling) must be at least 42 inches high on balconies and decks over 24 inches above grade, and 36 inches high on stairs. Handrails (graspable rails on stairs) must be between 34 and 38 inches above the stair nosing. Openings in guards must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere (to prevent children from fitting through). Guards must resist a horizontal load of 50 pounds per linear foot applied at the top rail.
Handrail Profile Requirements
The handrail — the graspable rail you hold while ascending or descending stairs — has specific profile requirements. It must have a graspable profile between 1.25 inches and 2 inches in diameter for circular sections. Non-circular profiles must have a perimeter between 4 inches and 6.25 inches with a maximum cross-section of 2.25 inches. The handrail must be continuous for the full length of the stair run, with returns at the ends to prevent clothing from snagging.
Material Options for Code Compliance
Both steel and aluminum easily meet the structural requirements of the building code. Steel tube sections of 1.5 inches and larger provide more than adequate strength for handrails. Aluminum railings use slightly larger sections to achieve equivalent strength. Cable rail infill systems with stainless steel cable at 3-inch spacing meet the 4-inch sphere test while maintaining views. Glass panel infill provides complete transparency while exceeding structural requirements.
Common Code Violations to Avoid
The most common building code violations we see on existing properties include guard height less than 42 inches on elevated decks, opening spacing greater than 4 inches (especially with horizontal rail designs), lack of a graspable handrail on stairs with more than three risers, and guards that flex or move when leaned against. If your existing railings have any of these issues, they may need to be brought up to code during renovation or sale.
