How to Choose Between Steel and Aluminum Railings

Railings are one of the most visible and most-used features on a deck, staircase, or balcony. On Vancouver Island, where outdoor living spaces are enjoyed year-round and weather exposure is constant, the material choice directly affects how your railings look, perform, and last. Both steel and aluminum are excellent choices, but for different reasons.

Steel Railings: Strength and Design Freedom

Steel gives fabricators the most design flexibility. It can be bent, forged, and welded into virtually any shape, making it ideal for custom curved railings, ornamental designs, and heavy-duty industrial applications. Steel railings feel solid and substantial — there is no flex or rattle. For commercial projects and high-traffic areas where strength matters most, steel is the standard choice.

Aluminum Railings: Low Maintenance and Corrosion Resistance

Aluminum railings are lighter, naturally resist corrosion, and never need repainting. For residential decks and balconies on Vancouver Island, aluminum eliminates the ongoing maintenance that steel demands. Powder-coated aluminum railings maintain their appearance for decades. They meet all BC Building Code requirements for handrail strength and are available in virtually any colour.

Building Code Compliance

Both materials easily meet BC Building Code requirements for residential and commercial railings. Key code requirements include minimum 42-inch guard height for decks over 24 inches, maximum 4-inch spacing between balusters, ability to withstand 50 pounds per linear foot of horizontal loading, and graspable handrail profile between 1.25 and 2 inches in diameter. We design all railing systems to meet or exceed these requirements.

Cost Comparison

Steel railings typically cost 15 to 25 percent less than equivalent aluminum railings for material alone. However, steel requires galvanizing and powder coating for durability in our climate, which narrows the price gap. When you factor in the long-term maintenance savings of aluminum (no repainting every 5 to 7 years), aluminum often has a lower total cost of ownership over 20 years.
