Metal fencing is the most durable option for Vancouver Island properties, but with several types available, choosing the right one requires understanding the trade-offs between cost, appearance, maintenance, and performance. Here is a practical comparison of every metal fencing option available on the Island.
Chain Link Fencing
Chain link is the most affordable metal fencing option and the fastest to install. Modern chain link comes in galvanized (silver) or vinyl-coated (black, green, brown) finishes. It provides excellent security and visibility, making it ideal for property boundaries, pet enclosures, and commercial yards. The downside is aesthetics — chain link does not enhance curb appeal. For residential properties where appearance matters, consider upgrading to a welded panel fence instead.
Welded Steel Panel Fencing
Custom welded steel fence panels offer the best combination of strength, security, and appearance for most Vancouver Island properties. Panels are fabricated from steel tube and bar, hot-dip galvanized, and powder coated in your choice of colour. Designs range from simple vertical pickets to elaborate patterns with scrollwork and custom elements. Custom welded fencing costs more than chain link but provides far superior aesthetics and property value.
Aluminum Fencing
Aluminum fencing is lighter, naturally corrosion-resistant, and maintenance-free. It is the premium choice for oceanfront and waterfront properties where salt spray would accelerate steel corrosion even through galvanizing. Aluminum fence panels can mimic the look of ornamental iron without the weight or maintenance. The trade-off is cost — aluminum fencing typically costs 30 to 50 percent more than equivalent steel, and it is not as strong if impact resistance matters.
Ornamental Iron
Traditional ornamental iron fencing is handcrafted from solid steel bar and features elaborate designs with finials, scrolls, and custom elements. It is the most expensive option but makes a strong visual statement for heritage homes and estate properties. Ornamental iron requires ongoing maintenance — repainting every few years to prevent rust in our coastal climate.
Our Recommendation for Vancouver Island
For most residential properties, we recommend custom welded steel panels with hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating. This gives you the best balance of strength, appearance, longevity, and value. For waterfront properties, aluminum is worth the premium. Contact T & C Fabrication at 250-202-1643 or use our online estimator for a free fencing quote.
