Madill Yarder Structural Rebuild — Sayward Forest

A Sayward-based logging outfit had a Madill yarder with severe structural damage to the main frame and tower base. Years of high-line yarding in steep old-growth terrain had taken its toll, with multiple cracks in critical load-bearing members.
This was a full structural rebuild — not just patching cracks. We removed damaged sections, fabricated replacement members from T1 structural steel, and welded them in with full-penetration groove welds. The tower base received new gusset plates and a reinforced mounting system.
The project took two weeks on-site in Sayward. We set up temporary shop facilities to handle the fabrication and welding, including pre-heating for the heavy T1 sections to prevent hydrogen cracking.
The Challenge
Multiple structural cracks in the yarder frame and tower base from years of high-stress yarding operations. The machine was the operation's primary production unit.
Our Solution
Performed a full structural rebuild with T1 steel replacement members, full-penetration welds, new gusset plates, and reinforced tower base mounting. Pre-heated all heavy sections to prevent hydrogen cracking.
The Result
The rebuilt yarder returned to full production and has been running strong through a full logging season. The reinforced structure exceeds original factory specifications.
