Custom Cedar & Steel Driveway Gate — Heriot Bay
A Heriot Bay homeowner wanted a driveway gate that blended the natural beauty of cedar with the strength and security of steel. The property sits on a steep gravel driveway with heavy rain exposure, so the gate needed to handle weather, weight, and daily use without warping or rusting.
We designed a dual-swing gate with a welded steel frame and western red cedar infill panels. The steel was hot-dip galvanized before powder coating in matte black, and the cedar was left to weather naturally for that classic West Coast look.
The gate includes heavy-duty hinges rated for the weight, a manual latch system with padlock provision, and enough ground clearance for the gravel slope. Total span is 16 feet across the driveway.
The Challenge
Steep gravel driveway with significant rain exposure required a gate that could handle weather extremes and daily vehicle traffic without sagging or warping over time.
Our Solution
Welded a steel frame from 2x3 rectangular tubing with cross-bracing for rigidity, then mounted cedar planks with stainless steel fasteners. Hot-dip galvanized the entire frame before powder coating.
The Result
The gate has been in use for over a year with zero maintenance issues. The cedar has developed a beautiful silver patina while the steel frame remains rock solid.
