Summer on Vancouver Island is when construction and renovation projects come alive. Longer days, drier weather, and access to trades all make the months from May through September the ideal window for outdoor metalwork projects. But summer is also when every fabricator, contractor, and supplier is at their busiest. Planning ahead is essential to getting your project completed on schedule.
Start Your Planning Now
The biggest mistake homeowners and contractors make is waiting until June to start planning a summer project. By then, fabrication shops are booked out weeks ahead, and material lead times can add more delays. If you want a gate, fence, railing, or structural project completed this summer, start the conversation with your fabricator in March or April. This gives time for design consultation and site measurement, material ordering with adequate lead time, fabrication scheduling, and coordination with other trades.
Material Lead Times
Standard steel tube, plate, and bar are generally available within a week from local suppliers. But specialty materials — marine-grade aluminum, stainless steel, specific alloy grades — may have two to four week lead times. Powder coating and galvanizing add additional time: typically one to two weeks for powder coating and one to three weeks for hot-dip galvanizing, depending on the size of the batch and the galvanizer's schedule.
Coordinating with Other Trades
Metal fabrication often interfaces with other trades. Gate posts may need concrete footings from a mason. Deck railings need the deck framing to be complete first. Structural steel needs to be in place before framers, electricians, or plumbers can do their work. Good fabrication shops understand sequencing and will coordinate with your general contractor or other trades to minimize delays.
Getting Your Estimate
For an accurate estimate, we need dimensions and layout of the project, material preferences (steel, aluminum, stainless), finish requirements (paint, powder coat, galvanize), site access details, and your target completion date. Photos and sketches are extremely helpful. Use our online estimator for a ballpark figure, or call Ted at 250-202-1643 for a detailed quote.
