Logging equipment on Vancouver Island works in some of the toughest conditions in the industry. Steep terrain, heavy loads, wet weather, and remote sites all take their toll on machines. Structural failures do not happen suddenly — they develop over weeks or months with warning signs that experienced operators and mechanics can spot. Here are five signs that your equipment needs professional structural repair.
1. Visible Cracks in Welds or Base Metal
This is the most obvious sign and the most dangerous to ignore. Cracks in boom welds, frame joints, or pin boss areas will only grow under continued loading. A crack that is one inch today could be a foot long next week and a catastrophic failure the week after. If you see any crack in a structural weld or near a high-stress joint, shut the machine down and schedule a professional repair immediately. Crack repair involves grinding out the defect, pre-heating the metal, and re-welding with the correct procedure.
2. Excessive Play in Pins and Bushings
When pins and bushings wear beyond tolerance, the excessive play creates impact loading on structural components — essentially hammering the structure from the inside with every movement. You will feel this as a clunking or slapping sensation during operation. Worn pins should be replaced and bores checked for ovality. If bores are worn beyond tolerance, they need to be machined or built up with weld and re-bored.
3. Hydraulic Cylinder Drift
If a boom, stick, or bucket cylinder drifts under load — slowly sinking even with the control in hold position — it indicates either a seal failure or a scored cylinder rod. Continuing to operate with a drifting cylinder is both inefficient and dangerous. The unexpected movement can overload structural members in ways they were not designed for.
4. Misalignment or Tracking Issues
If your machine pulls to one side, tracks unevenly, or the boom does not swing true, the frame or swing bearing may be damaged. Frame twist on logging trucks and trailers is common after running on rough roads. Misalignment puts asymmetric loads on structural components and accelerates fatigue damage.
5. Unusual Noises or Vibrations
Grinding, popping, or cracking sounds during operation are never normal. These sounds often indicate a structural member under stress, a broken or cracking weld, or a bearing failure. Do not operate through unusual sounds — shut down and inspect. At T & C Fabrication, we provide mobile structural repair for logging equipment across Vancouver Island.
