Structural Requirements
Staircases are structural elements with strict code requirements. BC Building Code specifies minimum tread width, maximum riser height, and stairway width requirements. Guardrails must be a minimum of 36 inches on stairs and 42 inches at landings. Balusters must be spaced no more than 4 inches apart. The staircase structure must support a minimum 40-pound-per-square-foot live load plus guardrail loading. We engineer every staircase to meet or exceed these requirements.
Material Options
Steel is the most common choice for staircase stringers (the structural side members) because of its strength and ability to span long distances with minimal depth. For exterior residential staircases, we recommend hot-dip galvanized steel with powder coating for maximum durability. Aluminum is used where weight is a concern or saltwater exposure is expected. Stainless steel cable or glass panel guardrails add a modern touch without blocking views.
Design Styles
Straight-run staircases are the simplest and most cost-effective. L-shaped and U-shaped staircases with landings are used where space requires a direction change. Spiral staircases offer compact footprints and dramatic visual appeal. Floating staircases with a single center stringer create an open, minimalist look. Tread Options
Metal staircases can accommodate many tread materials. Steel diamond plate provides industrial durability and built-in grip. Aluminum grating offers corrosion resistance and drainage. Wood treads (cedar, fir, or hardwood) add warmth and soften the industrial feel. Composite decking treads provide low maintenance and consistent appearance. The choice depends on location (interior vs exterior), aesthetic preference, and maintenance expectations.
