A custom metal gate is a significant investment in your property. Whether it is a steel and cedar driveway gate or an aluminum pedestrian gate, proper maintenance ensures it lasts decades. Here on Vancouver Island, our wet winters and salt air mean gates need a little extra attention.
Spring Inspection (March-April)
After winter, inspect your gate thoroughly. Look for any paint chips, scratches, or areas where the coating has worn through — these are entry points for rust on steel gates. Check all hinges, latches, and hardware for smooth operation. Lubricate hinges with a silicone-based lubricant (avoid WD-40 for long-term lubrication — it dries out). Test the latch mechanism and adjust if the gate has shifted during winter ground movement.
Summer Maintenance (June-July)
Summer is the best time for touch-up work. Sand any rust spots down to clean metal, prime with a rust-inhibiting primer, and repaint with exterior metal paint. For powder-coated gates, use a touch-up paint matched to your gate color. If your gate has cedar panels, check for any boards that have warped or split and replace them. Cedar naturally weathers to a silver-gray — this is normal and protective.
Fall Preparation (September-October)
Before the rainy season, apply a fresh coat of lubricant to all moving parts. Clear any debris from the gate track or swing area. Make sure drainage around the gate posts is clear so water does not pool at the base. If your gate has an automatic opener, test the battery backup and adjust the force settings.
Winter Awareness (November-February)
During winter, keep the gate area clear of fallen branches and debris. If your gate sticks in cold weather, check for ice buildup in the latch mechanism. Avoid forcing a stuck gate — this can bend hinges or warp the frame. A quick shot of de-icer spray usually does the trick.
